Before I answer this question, do keep in mind that there is really no exact number when it comes to determining how much garland you are going to need.<\/p>\n
There are some people who like a looser, more draped appearance while other people may like the garland closer together so there is more of it on the tree.<\/p>\n
It all depends on if you want to be able to see more greenery from the branches or if you want the decorations to stand out\u00a0 more.<\/p>\n
Also, keep in mind, some garland is made to take up more space. That means you may need less for the tree if you have a thick garland while with some string garlands you may need quite a bit more for your tree.<\/p>\n
The general consensus for decorating your Christmas tree is approximately 9-10 feet of garland for every foot of your tree<\/strong>. This is for a traditional sized Christmas tree and not a slim or pencil tree.<\/p>\n
So, if you have a 7 foot tree you would need approximately 63 – 70 feet of garland.<\/p>\n
For a 4 foot tree it would be approximately 36-40 feet of garland.<\/p>\n
If you have a slim or pencil tree you can take away a few feet since the tree is not as wide. For a pencil Christmas tree I would recommend approximately 7-8 feet of garland for every foot of the tree.<\/p>\n
So, for a 7 foot pencil Christmas tree you would need approximately 49-56 feet of garland.<\/p>\n
These numbers would be around the same for ribbon wrapped around your tree as well.<\/p>\n
Again, this is just an approximation and you may need less than this number. But, I always say it is always smart to err on the side of caution and buy more garland than needed and be able to return any unopened packages than to not buy enough and not be able to find any more of the garland.<\/p>\n
As you may know there are lots of different varieties of Christmas tree garland from the old school tinsel garland to glitter beaded garland and just about anything in between. In fact, if you can wrap it around your tree you can use it as garland.<\/p>\n
The traditional way to hang garland is to simply wrap it around the width of the tree with it gently hanging off the branches.<\/p>\n
You don’t want it tightly wrapped around the tree branches as you just want it to lay on the ends and have a gentle swag to it.<\/p>\n
If you have a larger Christmas tree you can even do larger swags and incorporate two different garlands that run sort of parallel to each other throughout the tree.<\/p>\n
Another idea is to take ribbon, burlap, or deco mesh and use it as vertical garland. You start at the top of your tree right by your tree topper and simply cascade the garland down to the bottom. You can work it into the branches and even attach it if needed to get the looped effect.<\/p>\n
You can even make your Christmas tree topper<\/a> out of the same ribbon you use for the garland.<\/p>\n
