How To Hang Christmas Decorations Without Damaging Walls http://achristmascelebration.net/how-to-hang-christmas-decorations-without-damaging-walls/ Fri, 11 Nov 2016 20:31:33 +0000 http://achristmascelebration.net/?p=1847 If you rent your home or you simply just don’t want nail holes in your walls you may be wondering this holiday season how to hang Christmas decorations without damaging walls. Decorating for the holidays can be so much fun but it’s not fun seeing all the tiny nail or screw holes you had to make and then patch after the holidays are over.

Fortunately, there are really easy ways to hang most Christmas decorations such as wreaths, garland, wood plaques, and picture frames without having to cause any damage to your walls or ceiling.

Use Command Hooks For Christmas Decorating

The easiest and safest way that I have found to hang any type of season decorations in my home (or even on the outside of home) is by using Command Hooks.

There are all kinds of Command Hooks from small decorating clips to large wreath hooks that you can use to hang just about any type of Christmas decoration. They even have spring clips and cord clips as well.

Not only do you have a variety of hooks to choose from but they are so very simple to use.

All you have to do is follow the directions by placing the adhesive strip onto the wall and then removing the other liner from the strip and placing your hook onto it. Wait 20-30 minutes for the hook to really set onto the adhesive strip and then simply hang your decoration.

When it is time to remove the decoration you just take off the decoration from the hook and pull the tab on the strip part down slowly to fully get the adhesive to remove from the wall.

Be sure to follow the exact manufacturer’s directions for the hooks to ensure a damage-free removal. You don’t want to simply rush and pull the hook off as this will cause paint to come with the hook.

The Command Hooks aren’t just for wreaths and pictures but you can use them to hang ornaments and lights in your home as well. You can string ornaments and then wrap the string around the hooks to have them hanging down off the wall or even your ceiling.

You can even use the hooks to hang your stockings from the fireplace mantle as they can be stuck on top of the mantle and then covered with garland or stick them underneath the mantle and hang the stockings that way.

The only drawback to using Command Hooks for decorating during Christmas is that it can add up in price even though you’ll find that the hooks are rather inexpensive.

To save some money I make sure that I keep all my hooks when I am done so that I can re-use the actual hooks next year and not have to spend money on buying the hooks anymore but use up the extra strips that come with them and then just buy replacement strips which are cheaper than buying the hooks over again.

Another thing that I have done in the past is that I have simply used the nails or screws that are already in the wall and gotten creative on the best way to hang the decorations. I’ll take down most of the everyday decor items and instead hang up the Christmas ones in their place so I don’t have to add any more holes to the walls.

This may not work for all people especially people who rent who don’t want to put any holes in the walls to begin with.

If you are really set against causing any type of damage to your walls but you still want to decorate your home for Christmas, then I would recommend you check out all the different Command Hooks to find ones that will fit your decorating needs.

The hooks have been the best way that I have found to decorate for Christmas without causing damage to walls or anything else in your home.

How To Hang Christmas Ornaments In Your Window http://achristmascelebration.net/how-to-hang-christmas-ornaments-in-your-window/ Thu, 20 Oct 2016 23:10:47 +0000 http://achristmascelebration.net/?p=1732 You’ve probably seen the pictures on Pinterest or maybe even have had a friend or family member decorate their windows with ornaments, and now you want to give it a go this Christmas.

Christmas ornaments hanging in a window can be a nice way to not only decorate the inside of your home but open up your drapes and blinds and the ornaments can be seen from outdoors as well.

Although having ornaments hanging in your window can have a big effect on your decor, it actually doesn’t take much to accomplish the task.

In fact, this is easily something even a beginner crafter or decorator can do with no problem.

The cool thing about hanging the ornaments is that you can choose from all kinds of different ornaments to make it fit the style of your decor. You can change it up with small and large ornaments or simply choose larger ornaments of the same size.

You can stick with a certain theme such as all pink and green Christmas ornaments or you can go with a bunch of different Christmas colors. You can even add in other decorations with the ornaments like glittery snowflakes or small packages wrapped up as Christmas gifts.

There are a few different ways that you can even hang the ornaments depending on what exact style you are going for. Here’s a real simple way that you can string the ornaments to hang in front of your window.

How To Hang Christmas Ball Ornaments From the Window

What You’ll Need:

  • Christmas ornaments of your choosing – extra large or regular size both work but you may need more of the regular size to fill in spots
  • Coordinating ribbon – a thicker ribbon of at least 2″ or even other material like tulle works as well
  • Floral wire or 28 gauge wire
  • Small Command hooks – you’ll need as many hooks as you have ornaments
  • Scissors

Directions:

Before you start cutting or hanging anything I recommend that you plan out what and where you are going to hang everything. This way you can properly space the ornaments and get the desired appearance without wasting too much time correcting mistakes.

I recommend that you have everything evenly spaced and vary the lengths of the ornaments as it may be too difficult to get every ornament to hang at the exact same length. With varying lengths you can have a better design and not have to worry about everything looking perfectly even.

Once you have it all planned out, cut the ribbon to the desired length for the ornaments.

Then, thread the ribbon through the top hooks of the ornaments so you can have both ends even over the top of the ornament. For things like snowflakes that may not have the top hook area you can use the wire to make your own hook to thread the ribbon through.

Take a piece of wire and fold it in half to form a loop at the bottom and then twist the wire several times to make the loop secure.

Take the ends of each ribbon (opposite the ornament) and wrap the wire ends around both the pieces of ribbon so that you just have a wire loop at the end.

Take your Command hooks and position each one where you want an ornament to hang in the window. Place the hooks on the window molding for the appearance.

Once you have waited the allotted time for the hooks to be secure (usually about 20-30 minutes), hang the wire loop at each end of the ribbon on the hooks.

If you would rather avoid using Command hooks or if you already have a tension rod in place in your window you could also simply tie the ribbon over the rod instead of hooking it on the Command hooks.

This also works well but it may get in the way of your drapes closing if you plan on opening and closing them every day. The hooks do really work better for not getting the way as much of any window treatments.

This is such a fun and festive way to decorate any of the windows of your home but looks extra neat on a larger front window or you can take the time and hang the ornaments in all the front windows for your home.

These signs would be great for your front porch but could also be used to decorate your door or even your front garden area.

Christmas Porch Decorating Ideas

If you are interested in buying one of these signs for your porch and looking for some inspiration on decorating, here are a few ideas to help inspire the perfect holiday get-up for your home.

If you plan on using one of the larger signs (5 feet or taller) then the sign may be all that you need if you have a smaller porch, especially if you just have a small stoop or stairs in front of your home.

You can place the sign in the corner of your house or you can balance it against a side railing depending on the design of your porch. You want the sign to be able to be visible to visitors as well as to people driving by but you don’t want it to be in the way of getting in and out of your door.

If you have a larger front porch or if you are lucky enough to even have a porch that covers almost your entire front of your home, then you can always add some more decorations along with your sign.

With a larger porch you can still place the sign by your front door or in the corner, but you do have more options. You can balance in front of porch column on top of the stairs or even place it in the middle of your porch in the middle of your rocking chairs.

Some other decorations that you could pair with the Christmas signs include a small Christmas tree (plain or decorated) and a wooden box or basket filled with Christmas trinkets such as ornaments or pine cones.

As mentioned you can even utilize the porch furniture you already have to enhance the sign. An example would be placing the sign on a small table you have on the porch or even on a chair so that it is more visible.

Get really creative and use something like a wooden wagon or wooden sled decorated with evergreen and ribbon on your porch. The rustic and country style signs would go perfect with this decorating idea.

Of course Christmas lights and green garland are great traditional decorations that could easily be paired with one of these signs as well.

Christmas porch signs are a great way to decorate the outside of your home and there truly are so many ideas that you can use to incorporate these decorations.

If you still want to check out more ideas for decorating your porch this Christmas or just see some more signs, I recommend Esty.com as you can find so many unique and quality items that you are sure to find something that fits your decorating style perfectly.

Primitive Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas http://achristmascelebration.net/primitive-christmas-tree-decorating-ideas/ Tue, 28 Jun 2016 17:30:16 +0000 http://achristmascelebration.net/?p=1108 Looking for some new primitive Christmas tree decorating ideas for your home this year?

I have all types of great Christmas tree decorating styles and ideas that would work so well for a primitive, country, or even rustic theme.

For this type of style you want to make sure that you lean towards the antique and old fashioned style and avoid things like loud colors and modern appearances.

A primitive style Christmas tree can look absolutely beautiful when all put together. I’ve done all the work for you and come up with a whole guide of ideas and where to look for everything from primitive ornaments to primitive Christmas tree skirts and everything in between.

Primitive Christmas Tree Ornaments

Although there are all kinds of primitive ornaments that you can choose from, the most popular type would have to be the barn star Christmas ornaments.

The barn star is a staple in any type of prim, country or even rustic style of decorating you can find plenty of these types of ornaments for your Christmas tree.

The cool thing about these ornaments is that you can use them for other things besides your Christmas tree as well. They can be hung up to decorate your home all year round.

As I mentioned there are plenty of other prim style Christmas ornaments as well. Check out some of the best primitive Christmas tree ornaments below.

Primitive Christmas Tree Garland

There are a few different ways that you can go when it comes to a primitive Christmas tree garland.

You definitely would want to stay away from the more traditional shiny, plastic garlands or anything with bright colors. Instead you could go with something homemade like a cranberry and popcorn garland or something that has that old style feeling to it.

Here are a few prim Christmas tree garland ideas that I have come up with over the years.

Burlap Banner or Ribbon – For something a bit different on your prim or country Christmas tree, try a burlap banner or just plain burlap ribbon wrapped around your tree.

Burlap is often used in primitive style decorating and can be a neat way to add in some more texture into your tree.

There are banners that you can buy that read “Merry Christmas” or you can go with a simple roll of wide jute burlap ribbon for the tree. There is even red or green dyed burlap ribbon that you can use as well.

Fake Cranberry or Red Wood Beads – Another garland idea that you should consider for your tree is a string of fake cranberries or just a strand of red or burgundy wood beads that you often times find in primitive decor.

These strands are great for wrapping around the tree as garland but can also be used on other crafts and used as home decor for other times of the year. You can even place them in a basket or bowl if you decorate in a primitive style all year round.

Pip Berry Garland and Twig Garland – If you want to keep with more of a natural tone to your tree, then you may want to consider wrapping a pip berry garland around your tree.

You can find a few different styles of pip berry garlands. There are ones that simply have the twig garland with white or red berries while there are other ones that have other items on the garland such as stars.

To wrap these twig garlands around your tree you may have to play around with it a bit to make it look more natural and play around with the branches so that it sits on them properly.

But once you do that, these pip berry garlands can look simply beautiful on your tree.

Primitive Christmas Tree Toppers

There are all kinds of cool things that you can use as a primitive Christmas tree topper. In fact, I created a whole article just on this topic because I have seen so many neat ideas in the past.

You can choose from tin angels and barn stars to even more handmade toppers like a vintage looking gingerbread doll.

For even more ideas check out my recommendations on primitive Christmas tree toppers for all sorts of great finishing touches for your prim or country themed Christmas tree.

Primitive Christmas Tree Skirts

You can’t decorate your tree in a lovely prim style and then have a tree skirt that completely doesn’t match at the theme at all.

When it comes to primitive tree skirts look for something simple and something that looks handmade.

For example, a simple burlap tree skirt would really fit into any prim or rustic style tree.

You could also choose a skirt that has a heirloom quilted pattern in more natural and muted colors like burgundy, tan, and dark blue.

Here are a few ideas to choose from for your tree skirt.

There are actually several other great choices including some burlap skirts that have ruffles all around and other quilted patterned skirts as well.

Check out Amazon as well as Etsy.com for the best choices in primitive Christmas tree skirts.

More Primitive Christmas Tree Ideas

Here are a few more tips and ideas when it comes to decorating your primitive Christmas tree.

Use Patterned Ribbon or Fabric to Cheaply Decorate Your Tree

A simple and inexpensive way to decorate your tree and fill in some space is to just tie some ribbon around the branches of the tree. You can tie them into simple bows or just tie them in a knot and let them hang off the branches.

primitive christmas tree ideas Look for patterned fabric that represents the prim style like neutral colored plaids as well as gingham prints. If you can’t find a pattern you like or you just have some fabric or ribbon lying around at home you could use a plain color like burgundy as well.

You can even use the same fabric and make a large bow for the topper of the tree.

Cinnamon Salt Dough Ornaments Go Perfect with a Primitive Theme

Even if you have never made salt dough ornaments before you have probably at least seen or heard about them.

They are a really popular homemade Christmas ornament and are simple and inexpensive to make. In fact, they are a great craft that you can make with your kids or grand kids this holiday.

The key to making them look primitive is to make them with cinnamon to give them that darker brown coloring. Plus with the cinnamon they will make your tree spell delicious as well.

You could make anything from snowmen to stars or even stockings for the tree. Tie a gingham or plaid ribbon at the top of the ornament to hang them on the tree.

For a good cinnamon salt dough Christmas ornament recipe check out Where Your Treasure Is blog .

Don’t Forget To Use Items From Nature to Decorate Your Tree

If you are still looking for some decorations for your primitive tree it may be as easy as stepping out in your backyard or local park down the road.

Things like pine cones and branches make great additions to your prim tree. These work great for country themed Christmas trees as well.

You can go the simple route and string a pine cone up and hang it on your tree or get a little creative and add in some buttons, twigs, ribbon or other craft items to make your own unique ornament.

Remember that the basis behind primitive decorating is to keep things simple. Look for items that have a worn or aged look as well as ones that bring you back to nature.

These primitive Christmas tree ideas should be enough to get you started as you add your own flair and style to your family’s tree this year.

The size of the tree skirt you need for your Christmas tree depends on two main things:

  • The size of your Christmas tree
  • How much of the tree skirt do you want to see around the tree

Choosing the Right Size Christmas Tree Skirt for Your Tree

The first thing that you should do is to measure the diameter of the widest bottom part of your tree. All you have to do is to take a tape measure and measure all the way around the bottom in a circle.

If you want the tree skirt to be seen under the tree and to act as a decoration that attracts some attention then you would need a tree skirt that is just as wide as the bottom of your tree or slightly larger.

For example, if your tree measures 45 inches in diameter at the base, then you could go with a tree skirt that is 48 inches in diameter and have the outer of the edge of the skirt be slightly larger than the tree.

You could always go bigger with a 50 inch tree skirt in that situation as well and really have the tree skirt act as a separate decoration to add to the look of your tree.

On the other hand, if you just want a plain tree skirt and you don’t really want to draw attention to the ground around your tree, then you can always go with a smaller tree skirt. Just make sure that the skirt is large enough that it covers your entire tree stand so you don’t see it sticking out.

If you were going for that look and your tree measured 45 inches in diameter you would want to go with a tree skirt that measures around 44 inches or even 38 inches.

For an average 6 foot tree, the most popular size tree skirts is 48 inches. This usually ends up being right around the same length of the longest branches on the tree or slightly smaller.

For a mini tree or even a tabletop tree, I would go with a 21 inch tree skirt but I have seen some as small as 15 inches.

As you can see there is really no “right” or “wrong” size tree skirt for your tree. As long as it covers your entire tree stand base and you like the look of it, then it’s perfect for your family’s Christmas tree.

How to Make a Felt Christmas Tree for Kids to Decorate http://achristmascelebration.net/how-to-make-a-felt-christmas-tree-for-kids-to-decorate/ Mon, 26 Oct 2015 18:30:29 +0000 http://achristmascelebration.net/?p=887 felt christmas tree for kids If you have young kids and you don’t want them messing with your Christmas tree, try a felt Christmas tree that they can decorate and play with all they want.

The great thing about this type of Christmas tree is that there is nothing they can break or ruin and they will love having their own tree that they can decorate anyway they want.

Best of all you can easily make your own felt Christmas tree or check out one of the inexpensive done-for-you felt Christmas trees that you can buy below as well.

Making your own felt tree is pretty simple and you can take a lot of liberties and get creative with it, but it will take you some time to make it. For older kids you can even get them involved with making the tree and the ornaments to go on it.

How To Make a Felt Christmas Tree

You’ll need a few supplies for this Christmas craft.

Supplies:

  • Green felt (approximately a yard)
  • Various colors of felt for decorations
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard or Card Stock
  • Glitter glue, sequins, or other accessories for decorating
  • Adhesive strips or Velcro strips

Directions:

Draw your tree outline on the green felt. You should be able to find the large felt on rolls at your local craft or sewing store. The easiest way to draw your tree is to fold the felt in half and draw the outline on the one side of the fold so that when you cut it out each side is exactly the same.

Use the cardboard or card stock to make a template for your ornaments. An easy way to make a circle ornament is to find a cup or glass around your home and trace the circle so it’s perfectly round.

If you want to get a little creative you can do different decorations besides just round ornaments. If you have large cookie cutters you can trace those for ornaments. Other things you could include on your tree are teddy bears, snowmen, hearts, presents, candy canes, and Christmas lights.

You will also want a star or other topper for the top of the Christmas tree as well.

Once you have all your templates made then trace them onto the felt and cut them out.

You can use them just as they are as plain decorations or you can use glitter glue, puffy paint, sequins or other items to decorate the ornaments as you want. You can also use the other felt pieces you have to embellish the ornaments as well.

Use adhesive strips to hang your Christmas tree on the wall. Be sure to hang the tree with the bottom at the bottom of the wall so your kids can reach the whole tree.

Let your kids take the decorations and place them where they want on the tree. The felt decorations will stick to the tree without needing glue or tape.

Your kids can decorate it once and then let it be or let them decorate it over a couple different times throughout the holiday to keep them away from the real Christmas tree.

Buy a Felt Christmas Tree for Your Kids

If you are short on time this holiday or you simply just want to buy an already made felt tree with all the decorations there are some really nice options available.

You can buy a pre-made large felt Christmas tree that can be hung on the wall along with different felt ornaments, lights, and even presents to decorate the tree. I recommend that you buy the tree along with the decorations in a kit together as it is cheaper and your child can still get to decorate the tree the way they want.

One of my favorite felt trees for Christmas is this one made by Precious Cargo Designs at Etsy.com .

The neat thing about this tree is that they red presents at the bottom are pockets where you can store all the ornaments and decorations for the tree so you don’t lose them for next year.

The presents are not removable but the other decorations are.

How To Hang Christmas Stockings Without a Fireplace Mantle http://achristmascelebration.net/how-to-hang-christmas-stockings-without-a-fireplace-mantle/ Thu, 27 Aug 2015 02:09:18 +0000 http://achristmascelebration.net/?p=643 If you are wondering how you are going to hang Christmas stockings without a fireplace mantle in your home, I have some great ideas that will help you find something that works for your home.

Hanging stockings at Christmas time is one of the most popular traditions and just because you don’t have the traditional fireplace to hang them on, doesn’t mean that you still can’t participate in this tradition.

Christmas stockings can be a great way to decorate your home during the holidays and most of all super fun to get all those fun stocking stuffers on Christmas morning.

Here are 5 creative ways that you can hang your Christmas stockings if you don’t have a fireplace.

Use a Christmas Stocking Holder For The Wal l

Wooden Christmas stocking holders have become quite popular in the past few years. There are all kinds of great holders that you can find that easily hang on the wall and hold as many stockings as you would want to hang.

This is a nice option if you don’t have a fireplace but you do have plenty of wall space where you can hang the stockings.

The thing that I like most about this idea is that these stocking holders also double as cute Christmas decorations and most of them can be personalized with things like your family’s name as well as the number of pegs or hooks you need for the stockings.

I actually purchased a “the stockings were hung” sign that we have used for the past 3 years to hang the stockings on the wall above our couch. Here are some of my favorite stocking holders that you can hang on your wall this Christmas.

If you are looking for some sort of specific stocking hanger for your home, I recommend that you check out Etsy.com as you can find all sorts of great ideas and just about anything you would need to hang stockings on your wall with one of these signs.

Hang Your Stockings On Your Stairs

If you have a two story home another idea you could do that looks really nice is to hang your Christmas stockings from the stairs.

There are several different ways that you can do this depending on where your stairs are and what type of banister you have.

One way would be to simple take some thin ribbon and hang the stockings right over the railing so they simply hang down. You could then cover up the railing with some sort of decorative ribbon or garland if you wanted to hide the way you hung the stockings.

If you have a staircase that is open on one side to your main living area you could also hang the stockings at the bottom of the stairs so that they hang on the wall going up instead of at the top of the railing area. You would hang the stockings with rope or ribbon right around the balusters that go down the stairs.

Buy a Decorative Christmas Stocking Stand Holder

If you don’t mind spending some money this year in order to display your Christmas stockings, you can also consider buying a stocking stand holder. These are different than the holders above in that these stand on the ground and you can place your stockings on them in any fashion you wish.

They sort of almost look like a mini-coat rack for Christmas stockings or some  horizontal and almost mimic a fireplace mantle area.

Something like this would be nice if you have plenty of floor space and you want to make sure that the stockings are easily seen. Here are some options that you can consider if you want to go this route.

Use Command Hooks to Hang Your Christmas Stockings On the Wall

I admit that I use Command Hooks for lots of different things when it comes to decorating for the holidays. I use them to hang wreaths, hang any type of signs, as well as hang up other decorations on the walls.

What I like about these is that you don’t have to worry about putting a whole in the wall to hang something or ruining the paint job on your walls. If you pay attention to the weight limits on the different Command Hooks you shouldn’t have a problem with hanging decorations around your home.

Using Command Hooks to hang your stockings on the wall can save you some money as well as just give you a simple, classic look.

If you don’t want a big sign or stand and you don’t have the fireplace mantle to hang them from, play it easy and safe with hanging the stockings off clear Command Hooks.

A cool thing that I recently found out as well, Command does make decorative hooks as well. This means you could choose one of the decorative style hooks if you want a bit more fashion for hanging your stockings but still easily be able to remove the hooks without damaging your walls.

Hang Stockings From a Shelf or Dresser You Already Have

If you really want to save some money this year, utilize a dresser, shelf or other furniture that you already have in your home to hang your stockings. The free and simple way to hang the stockings would be to use any hooks or knobs that the furniture already has.

If you don’t mind spending some money, I would once again recommend the Command Hooks that you can attach to your furniture in order to keep the stockings in place. You can then decorate over the Command Hooks with some type of matching Christmas garland.

This idea would work well if the dresser or even entertainment center is close to the Christmas tree and is in the main room of your home so everyone can see the stockings.

Just remember to hang the stockings so that if you needed you could still utilize the shelf or furniture for what you may need it for.

Although you always see those iconic pictures of Christmas stockings hung on the fireplace mantle, you definitely don’t have to have a fireplace in order to hang your stockings in your home.

You just may need to get creative and utilize the space you do have in order to decorate your home and continue your Christmas stocking traditions.
